Born in sin, and doomed to die
(Thomas Kelly/Johannes Thomas Rüegg)

Born in sin, and doomed to die.

"And in sin did my mother conceive me." (Psalm 51,5)

1. Born in sin, and doomed to die,
  such are you, and such am I.
Nothing we can say or do,
  will or can make this untrue.
    Bitter is the cup we drink of;
    sad it is – 'tis sad to think of. PDF - Midi

2. But how sad the case would be –
  sad for you, and sad for me,
were it not for news from heav'n –
  news of grace, of sin forgiv'n!
    This can take away our sadness;
    this can fill our hearts with gladness.

3. Grace it is – 'tis grace indeed,
  when "a child of wrath" like me
is from guilt and ruin freed,
  and at length is brought to see,
    him whose voice is in the thunder –
    him whom angels view with wonder.

4. Grace, "the grace of God" it is;
  his in act, in purpose his.
Wonder, O ye heavens, with me,
  and thou earth, astonished be.
    Grace is what for sinners meet is;
    grace is what to sinners sweet is.

Thomas Kelly, Hymns on various passages of Scripture, ca. 1853, Hymn 334.
