Base among the base
(Thomas Kelly/Johannes Thomas Rüegg)

Base among the base.

"Sinners, of whom I am the chief." (1 Timothy 1,15)

1. Base among the base,
      Lord, I cry to thee;
    save me by thy grace,
      set the pris'ner free.
Hear the vanquished rebel's cry,
Save, me, save me, else I die. PDF - Midi

2. 'Twas to save the lost
      that thou cam'st from heaven;
    they will love thee most,
      who have most forgiv'n.
Hear me, then, O hear my cry,
Who must love thee more than I?

3. Who can have more cause?
      Who could further be,
    further than I was,
      Lord, from heaven and thee?
Hear me, then, O hear my cry,
Who will owe thee more than I?

4. No blasphemer I,
      nor of sin the slave;
    I believed a lie,
      but I was still grave.
I was earnest and devout,
and the future thought about.

5. But I thought "as men",
      and I knew not thee;
    good was evil then,
      evil good to me.
Lord, I knew not of thy love,
and against thy law I strove.

6. Often did I say,
      would that it were night;
    evil was the day
      when I saw the light.
Evil seemed the day to me,
when I first began to be.

7. 'Tis no longer so;
      praise to God for this.
    He is blessed, I know,
      who forgiven is.
He, and he alone has rest;
he, and he alone is blessed.

8. Saviour, all I want
      is to be forgiv'n;
    this one favour grant,
     Lord of earth and heaven.
When thy people meet on high,
who will louder sing than I.
