"The Spirit of the Truth" is he
(Thomas Kelly/Johannes Thomas Rüegg)

"The Spirit of the Truth" is he.

"Another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." (John 14,16)

1. "The Spirit of the Truth" is he
  whom thou, O Lord, appointed hast
to fill thy vacant place, and be
  thy people's teacher to the last. PDF - Midi

2. To comfort sent, and sent to bless,
  when he is present so art thou;
the saints are never "comfortless",
  they never were, nor are they now.

3. Nor shall thy people ever be
  without a comforter and guide;
the Spirit sent from heaven by thee
  shall with them to the end abide.

4, The word of promise makes it sure,
  no pledge but this we have or need;
possessing this we feel secure,
  for faithful is thy word indeed.

5. This privilege be ours, O Lord,
  the presence of "the Comforter";
expounder of the sacred word,
  without him we are sure to err.

6. Of unity the source alone,
  inspirer he of peace and love;
his presence and his power we own,
  the holy and pacific Dove.

7. 'Tis his, O Lord, to take of thine,
  and show it to thy people here;
'tis his upon their souls to shine,
  and bring the word of promise near.

8. The sacred office that he bears,
  a pledge of every blessing is:
in all their troubles and their fears,
  thy people may rejoice in this.

9. To us the Comforter is given,
  with all his grace and all his powers;
an earnest of the joys of heaven;
  this grace we ask, this grace be ours.

Thomas Kelly, Hymns on various passages of Scripture, ca. 1853, Hymn 159.
